Open Fire Cooking (1 day):
Come gather round the fire for a wild feast! This is a very hands-on class as we will work together to prepare multiple yummy dishes using a diversity of open-fire cooking methods including primitive pottery, soapstone slabs and bowls, pit bake, cooking on coals, rocket stoves, as well using cast-irons and dutch-ovens.
Our meal will be a collaboration of wild harvested and locally grown ingredients, cooked village style—with patience, skill, and celebration. We will also cover the wide world of tending fire, how to choose the right type of wood to burn to suit the manner of preparation and foods involved. It is an opportunity to witness the possibilities in synergizing a knowledge and familiarity with food, fire, and the abundance the southern Appalachians have to offer. This class is a ton of fun, enlightening to the palette, and warm to the belly.
Please bring a sharp knife, a notebook, and your own set of utensils and dishes (bowl, cup, plate, spoon, fork)
Students 12 and up are welcome with accompanying adult
