Hide Tanning - July

When the golden chanterelles start revealing their hidden interconnectedness with the soil and plants and give their fruiting bodies, students will gather and learn the magic and alchemy of hide tanning.

With dirty hands and clothes students will learn the process of transforming stinky, animal skins into beautiful soft, supple, leather,  Each student will take their own deer hide through the multiple day process and with lots of love and work, every student will end up with a hide that is worthy to be made into shoes, clothes, quivers or bags. Additionally, students will be walked through the process of “bark-tanned leathers” and how they can create their own leather out of any animal.

During the scraping and wringing and all the hard work it takes to tan a hide, students will also meditate on our own magick and how we can transform our “stink” into something more beautiful and magical.
