Introduction to Flint Knapping (stone tools)

Stone tools have been used by our human ancestors for over 3 million years! Come and learn how to break stone into useful tools and connect with your ancient ancestry!

In this full day class we will be learning about the principles of flint knapping (i.e. how energy travels through the stone) Additionally, we will learn the techniques of both pressure flaking and percussion flaking while learning how to break useful flakes off of large stones (novaculite)


Furthermore, we will be making stone tools from our local surroundings, using our handmade tools on the landscape, learning about the stone requirements for knapping, and learning how to use local materials just in case you forgot your knife.
