During this workshop, you will be creating a hand-bound, leather journal, including handmade paper, and barktan (natural, handmade leather) deerskin cover. All handmade leather materials will be provided for all students.
Humans began developing written symbols of language circa 3200 BC, and writing has evolved to become a necessary tool for our modern life. It can also be an art form, and a meditation.
This weekend will be a form of meditation itself. You will begin by making paper from foraged materials, and combine these sheets with 100% cotton paper, to create a 4.5" x 6" x 1" journal, the perfect size to hold in your hand.
You will use long-stitch binding to cover the pages with a beautiful piece of deer leather, tanned by hand, with traditional methods (take one of HOSS's tanning workshops to learn this skill yourself).
Once we have crafted our journals, we will write in them! We will discuss some ways to use these tools to deepen our relationships with ourselves, and the world around us. We will spend time observing and recording the natural world, and we will do the same for our own inner world. A journal can become a mirror and a place for personal practice. We are looking forward to sharing this sweet weekend with you!
