Sewing with buckskin is an adventure! And, like any adventure, you need to be prepared, with the right tools on hand, in order to succeed. Buckskin has stood the test of time as a luxurious, and valuable material, that has been used to make super soft clothing, and durable containers, throughout history. It can be a pleasure and a challenge to work with. If you have tanned your own buckskin, you know it can be intimidating to make that first cut. This weekend will give you all the tools you need to create your own buckskin masterpieces!
We will start out by making a leather stitch sampler. You will learn many stitches, from primitive and practical, to deluxe and decorative, and everything in between. We will take an in-depth look at leather, and buckskin specifically, learning to read this unique material and understand how to prepare it for a project.
You will learn how to prepare buckskin thong for stitching, and how to place patterns for cutting. You will be making a belt pouch with a gusset, and button closure, using various stitches you learned from the sampler. You will be provided with tools to take with you (awl and lacing needle), so that you can continue using this skill in the future. De-mystify the art of buckskin sewing with us!
